Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB)
Historic Architectural Review Board Duties
  • Preserve and protect the town’s historic places and areas
  • Issue or deny Certificates of Appropriateness for construction, reconstruction, substantial exterior alteration, razing or relocation within the Historic District
  • Assist and advise the Town Council, Planning Commission, other town departments and property owners on matters involving historically significant sites and buildings, land usage, parking facilities and signage in the Historic District
  • Evaluate and advise property owners on preservation issues
  • Conduct studies the Town Council or Planning Commission deem necessary
  • Propose additions or deletions to the Historic District
  • Adopt standards for historic architectural review
  • Formulate recommendations to Town Council for marking historic sites
  • Cooperate with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and other public and private parties to preserve, restore and conserve historic landmarks, buildings, sites and areas
The Town Council appoints the members of the Historic Architectural Review Board to five-year terms. At least three of the five members of the HARB must be town residents.
